Qatargas has announced, for the second consecutive year, its sponsorship of the Qatar Minor Ice Hockey Association (QMIHA) for the 2014-2015 Ice Hockey season. Qatargas’ support as ‘Pearl Sponsors’ comes as part of the Company’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the field of sport.
Mansour Rashid Al-Naimi, Qatargas Public Relations Manager said: “We are very pleased to support Qatar Minor Ice Hockey Association once again during their new season. Our support to the game of Ice Hockey forms part of a CSR strategy we adopted in supporting sports that gain fast popularity in Qatar, thereby contributing to the goals of the State of Qatar’s National Vision 2030. We believe that our support to Ice Hockey will help popularize the game in Qatar and introduce youngsters to this exciting sport.”
Heather Ryan, QMIHA President said: “We are delighted to welcome back Qatargas as our Pearl Level Sponsor for Qatar Minor Ice Hockey Association and I would very much like to thank Qatargas for extending its support of our organization. This year we have 136 children playing ice-hockey here in Doha, including a number of Qatari nationals. Our league could grow further as there is a waiting list of children hoping to join especially at the initiation level, but our challenge is finding sufficient ice-time amongst competing interests in order to accommodate more children.”
QMIHA is a non-profit, amateur, youth ice hockey league established in 2001. Operated by volunteers, QMIHA focuses on community service and promoting sports for our youth. The 2014/15 Ice Hockey Season began on 7 September with a hockey camp held for returning players. The QMIHA offers ice-hockey for both boys and girls from age 5 (initiation) right through to under 18’s. Each season QMIHA players actively compete in a number of away tournaments in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain.
Last season for the first time the Qatar Raiders sent their under 18 division to participate in a Singapore Ice-Dragon’s Bantam level ice-hockey tournament. This season, QMIHA plans on hosting two regional ice-hockey tournaments in Doha, inviting teams from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al-Ain and Saudi Arabia. The first tournament in Doha is scheduled for 28-29 November 2014 for under 12’s.
