The College of Health Sciences at Qatar University (QU-CHS) hosted an event on March 9 in commemoration of the World Kidney Day. Themed “Kidneys and women’s health”, the event was organized by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).

Around thirty students from CHS departments of Public Health, Biomedical Sciences and Human Nutrition participated in the event. Public Health students distributed awareness brochures and health tips about maintaining the kidneys in good health. In addition, they developed a question-answer competition and rewarded correct answers. Biomedical Sciences students distributed brochures about the available tests for kidney function and their interpretation, while Human Nutrition students distributed brochures about healthy nutrition, ways to reduce salt intake, and kidney health. They also provided free testing of the anthropometric measurements, and measurements of height, weight and percentage body fat.

Commenting on the event, CHS Dean and QU Biomedical Research Center Director Prof Asma Al-Thani said: “Kidney failure is a condition that is currently affecting the health of many citizens and residents in Qatar. Around 195 million women around the world are affected by kidney failure making it the eighth leading cause of death in women. This event aligns with CHS commitment to provide its students with the opportunity to connect with the public through outreach initiatives and to educate them and raise their awareness about important health issues. This will contribute to shaping the future generation of health professionals who will take the lead in the health care sector.”
