Qatar University (QU) and Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre (QSRTC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further strengthen their long standing partnership, committing to greater collaboration in technology, innovation, and research and development, as well as offering greater opportunities for students and faculty.

The agreement was signed by QU President Prof Sheikha Al-Misnad and Mr. Wael Sawan, Managing Director and Chairman of Qatar Shell Companies, in the presence of QU Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Dr Mazen Hasna, (names to be added), QU faculty and senior Qatar Shell staff.

The MoU will consolidate the numerous collaborations that already exist between Qatar University and Qatar Shell. Under the MoU, Qatar Shell will sponsor and support the educational programs offered by Qatar University; share industrial and technical knowledge with QU faculty and students; facilitate greater collaboration between the two organizations through expert lectures; introduce more research and development initiatives expand student engagement through internships, competitions, awards and recruitment of QU students by Qatar Shell; in addition to supporting events organized by the university.

A Joint Steering Committee, co-chaired by Prof. Al-Misnad and Mr. Sawan, will be established to manage, facilitate and implement the various programmes. The committee will have representatives from both organizations.  

Prof Al-Misnad stated, “Strong partnerships between academia and industry offer great mutual benefits in terms of sharing skills and expertise and enabling students to receive a world-class education from those who are the best in their field. This overarching MoU allows QU and Qatar Shell to further develop our already excellent relationship and we look forward to greater collaboration with them in the future on many areas of common interest.”

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Wael Sawan said: “Qatar Shell has been working closely with Qatar University for many years and we are extremely proud to expand our long standing partnership.  This MoU will further strengthen our cooperation with QU to further develop local human capacities and talents that will help lead to a knowledge-based economy in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.”

As an example of the close partnership, Qatar University has initiated a research project on the learning and development benefits for engineering students of participating in the Shell Eco-marathon. In the Shell Eco-marathon, student teams design and build ultra fuel-efficient cars and race them against teams from around the world. This research project is to be the first in the world to assess the competition’s academic impact. Qatar University has participated in the Shell Eco-marathon since 2011.

Over the past years, Qatar University and Qatar Shell have also worked on other numerous initiatives together such as: the Al Bairaq program to open up the world of science to young people, the Shell-Eco Marathon Competition, Engineering Week to bring awareness to the importance of science and engineering to encourage students to choose engineering careers, Chemical Engineering Majliss for Alumni reunion, Life is Engineering to promote the science of engineering among high school students and simplify science for them, and many others.
