The two-day ‘Darb Al Salama’ Road Safety campaign, launched by Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Programme (RLIC-COP), came to a conclusion last Thursday at Al Shamal Sports Club. 

More than 800 school students and parents attended the event in Al Shamal Sports Club. Participants took part in a series of interactive activities testing their hazard anticipation skills, defensive driving techniques, and awareness of speed. The initiative also covered the topics of pedestrian safety, seatbelt and child seats, and included life-sized simulators enabling visitors to experience the impact of car rollovers and low-speed crashes, in addition to highlighting the importance of wearing a seat belt.

Ras Laffan Community Outreach 2 [qatarisbooming.com].jpgThe initiative was organized in partnership with the Ministry of Interior, Traffic Department, Qatar Red Crescent, and Community Policing Department. Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Programme is a consortium that includes Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Shell, RasGas, Dolphin Energy Limited, Pearl GTL (the world’s largest gas to liquids plant delivered by Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Shell) and Oryx GTL. The year-long northern community initiative is targeted at drivers, passengers and pedestrians aged between 14-21 years. The programme uses a mix of experiential and computer-based driver education software to help change driving and road safety behaviour, with the long term vision of reducing fatalities and serious injuries resulting from road accidents.

A key activity of the ‘Darb Al Salama’ Road Safety campaign is the ‘Rakkiz Tislam’ programme, which means ‘Focus and be safe’ in Arabic. ‘Rakkiz Tislam’ which was launched for the first time in the Middle East,  is a realistic driver learning software module based on a highly successful young driver scheme in the UK, designed to help young drivers identify and respond to potentially unsafe traffic situations. The programme was designed and tailored to Qatar’s roads and driving environment by the driver education software company ‘A2om’ and includes real traffic scenes filmed on Qatar’s roads.

Ras Laffan Community Outreach 3 [qatarisbooming.com].jpgThis outreach campaign is brought to Qatar by Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Programme. It aims at improving road safety through the Community Outreach Programme in the northern communities in support of the Qatar National Vision 2030. The campaign is one of many activities planned to take place in the months ahead in the northern communities, and is the second event of its kind after the Al Thakira Youth Centre initiative which took place late last year and was attended by 800 participants and 12 local schools.

The ‘Darb Al Salama’ initiative will be rolled out in Al Khor as part of the “Safe Spring Campaign” in (23-25 February), Simaisma Youth Centre (2-3 March), and Al Kaaban Youth Centre (16-17 March). Separate days are set for men and women.
