The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) has launched a smartphone app to help construction workers improve their professional and personal lives during their time in Qatar. Following an initial pilot with 250 workers, 'Madad SC Workers' has been rolled out to all 22,000 workers engaged on SC infrastructure projects. The word 'madad' means 'help' in both Arabic and Hindi.

Initiated by the SC's Workers' Welfare Department and Special Projects Office, in collaboration with Qatar Innovation Community, the app was developed to leverage the overwhelming number of workers who use smartphones and would benefit from a customized platform capable of enhancing their everyday lives. The app gives users a set of services, including streamlined finance and remittance options, easy communication with family and friends, increased awareness of leisure and social activities, access to health and nutrition advice, access to SC's work grievance hotline, participation in regular surveys, storing soft copies of personal documents, such as Qatar ID and passport, access to all key emergency telephone numbers, and location maps of ATMs, parks and health centers.

The app includes the following features:

• Streamlined finance and remittance options
• Easy communication with family and friends
• Increased awareness of leisure and social activities
• Access to health and nutrition advice
• Access to SC's work grievance hotline
• Participation in regular surveys
• Stores soft copies of personal documents, such as Qatar ID and passport
• Access to all key emergency telephone numbers
• Location maps of ATMs, parks and health centres

Led by the SC’s Projects Advisor, Oscar Liebana, in collaboration with local tech experts A101,  the app was developed following an intensive consultation period with SC workers. During the development phase, workers at Lusail Stadium were asked for their feedback on the features, functionality and design of the app, which is intended as a one-stop shop for all their needs. "This app helps us to provide support for workers whenever and wherever they need it," SC's Workers' Welfare Executive Director Mahmoud Qutub said. "It also allows us to establish direct communication with them, which we know from experience is vital. The introduction of an app designed specifically for workers is yet another example of the SC using innovation to protect the welfare of workers building stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup," Qutub added.

For his part, Liebana added that involving the workers in the process was key to designing an app that benefits them. "Their feedback was critical and has led to the first version of an app that should enhance many aspects of their life in Qatar."
