The South African Embassy in Qatar and Sasol, the international integrated energy and chemical company, joined efforts to mark the observance of ‘Mandela Day’ by collecting in-kind donations that were presented to Tayf/Qatar Charity in a brief ceremony today.

Employees of the South African embassy and Sasol Qatar donated items such as new and used clothing, toys, electronic gadgets, and other non-perishable goods for the benefit of people in need. These items were collected in a dedicated Tayf container placed in front of ‘The Gate’ mall, provided by Qatar Charity.  This donation drive is in the spirit of the inspiring work of Nelson Mandela. While ‘Mandela Day’ is celebrated on 18 July, this drive represents the spirit of doing good beyond just one day. The donation drive will last till the 22nd September, 2013.

Officially declared by the United Nations in 2009,‘Nelson Mandela International Day' has been celebrated annually in South Africa and across the globe in honor of the legendary South African peace and anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela.‘Mandela Day’ aims to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good.

H.E. Saad Cachalia, Ambassador of South Africa to Qatar and Jack Saba, Corporate Affairs Manager at Sasol Qatar presented the collected donations to Abdullah Hadi Al Dosari, Director of In-Kind Donations at Qatar Charity in a handover ceremony.

H.E. Saad Cachalia said“Mandela Day is a time to give back to the society that we live in, by committing a selfless act, however small it might be.Through his actions, Mandela has shown us that to make a difference in the world all that’s required is fierce determination and patience. Madiba, as he is respectfully referred to in South Africa, is and will forever be remembered for his humility, empathy and struggle for freedom. We thank each and every person who contributed to the donation drive here in Qatar.”

Mr. Saba remarked, “Sasol strives to promote people-centered sustainable development of the communities in which we operate. Nelson Mandela’s values of community service and volunteerism are universal. It was natural for us to partner with Qatar Charity which works for the betterment of society in Qatar and abroad, and aid them in the wonderful work they are doing to benefit those in need.We are inspired by the generous philanthropic spirit of the Qatari leadership.”

"We are grateful to the South African Embassy in Qatar and Sasol Qatar, for giving back to the community. We continue to encourage organizations and individuals to come forward with contributions to Qatar Charity, as each donation can make a difference in the life of someone less fortunate. Many people around the world and close to home struggle to meet daily needs."Said Mr. Al Dosari.

Sasol employees in South Africa mark ‘Mandela Day’ by volunteering at schools, old age homes, orphanages and youth care centers.

Sasol maintains a strong commitment to support Qatar’s National Vision 2030 through its Corporate Social Investment efforts, which include a variety of social, educational, entrepreneurial and environmental initiatives. In 2012, Sasol initiated the 'Definitely Able' campaign, which has focused on empowering and bringing attention to the abilities of the disabled community in Qatar. Sasol also extends its support to the entrepreneurship community by partnering with Al Fikra Qatar national business plan competition and through an MOU with the Bedaya Center to help mentor budding entrepreneurs in Qatar.

Present in Qatar since 2008, Sasol marked the opening of its new state of the art office in Doha by H.E. Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada - Qatar’s Minister of Energy and Industry, earlier this month.
