Vodafone also building an international landing station to provide an alternative connection to the outside world

Vodafone Qatar has started building its fibre optic backbone network, capable of delivering super fast data speeds and flawless call quality to business and home consumers alike.

In line with Qatar’s 2030 vision, Vodafone is working in partnership with the government and ictQATAR to deliver superfast broadband to businesses and consumers in Qatar.  LS Cable has been awarded the contract to build Vodafone’s fibre backbone, which will be connected to the Qatar National Broadband Network (QNBN) initiative, providing fibre-to-home and businesses throughout the entire country.

To ensure reliability, the network will be fully redundant, with two data centres in separate locations.  Digging of the first trenches between the data centres has already begun.

“This initiative would not have been possible without the total support from both government and municipality agencies, and ictQATAR” said Jenny Howe, Chief Technology Officer at Vodafone.

Furthermore, Vodafone partner Alcatel-Lucent has been awarded a contract to fully integrate the fixed-line optical fibre network with Vodafone’s mobile network.

“Vodafone is building a state of the art IP-based network with converged mobile and fixed platforms that will provide world class security and performance” said Jenny Howe. “With no old-style legacy platforms to integrate, Vodafone’s network will provide an innovative range of seamless services across mobile and fixed networks” continued Jenny Howe.

In addition to the super fast fibre backbone network, Vodafone has also started building Qatar’s second international landing station, to provide an alternative connection to the outside world, increasing Qatar’s international call and data capacity.  “Having an alternative international landing station is a key strategic advantage to Qatar ” said John Tombleson. Acting CEO of Vodafone. “Vodafone’s international network will offer an alternative choice for businesses in the country to secure their international connectivity with a world-class network.”
