The Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani met with Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress (NPC) Li Zhanshu at the People’s Palace on Thursday.

At the beginning of the meeting, Li Zhanshu welcomed HH the Amir on behalf of the People’s Congress. He said the Chinese side attaches great importance to the visit of HH the Amir, which will push the bilateral ties to a new level. He said the 2014 meeting between HH the Amir and the Chinese president helped raise the ties to a strategic partnership, pointing out that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries has increased since last year.

The chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress hailed Qatar’s development, which he said combines Arab heritage with modern civilisation. He said Qatar’s economic diversification strategy has helped make it a maritime and financial hub in the Gulf region. He also congratulated HH the Amir on the Qatari football team’s victory in the Asian Cup semi-final and praised Qatar’s rapid development in sports in recent years. He said he looked forward to a wonderful performance by the Qatari team in the final match against Japan.

On his part, HH the Amir thanked Zhanshu for his words of encouragement, noting that relations between the two countries have developed significantly and this visit is an appropriate opportunity to further promote them. HH the Amir underlined the Chinese leadership’s support to sports by organising major sporting events such as the 2008 Olympics and Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. He also hailed China’s cooperation with Qatar in the field of sports with some Chinese working in the Organising Committee of the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

HH the Amir also underlined that Qatar has investments in China which shows its confidence in the Chinese economy, while stressing that finding other investment opportunities is Qatar’s future goal. During the meeting, they reviewed the prospects of enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries in economy and trade through the Silk Road which links China to the region, as well as the parliamentary field. The two sides also discussed the means of enhancing cooperation in organising sports events and world championships, especially in the Fifa World Cup 2022.

The meeting also dealt with a number of regional and international issues, especially the current Gulf crisis. The two sides stressed the importance of diplomatic dialogue between all parties. The meeting was attended by members of the official delegation accompanying HH the Amir and a number of members of the People’s Congress.
