Public Works Authority (Ashghal) President Eng Saad bin Ahmed al Muhannadi has extended his greetings to the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, the Father Emir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, the wise government of the State of Qatar and its people on the occasion of the National Day, expressing his pride in the trust bestowed by the wise leadership on Ashghal and determination to carry out the duties delegated to them so as to reflect the statement of HH the Emir that 'Qatar deserves the best'.

Speaking to QNA, Muhannadi said the slogan of National Day celebrations this year, 'Promise of Prosperity and Glory', represents"what we see in terms of economic, urban and scientific development and feel in terms of determination to overcome all the challenges facing us". He added that Ashghal is committed to continuing its march to develop Qatar's infrastructure according to the highest standards. Ashghal concluded major phases of many roads, sewage network and other infrastructure projects in 2017 despite the challenges posed by the ongoing blockade, he said, adding that pace of work actually picked up after the first half of the year.

In the area of highways, the authority has completed works on 250 km out of a total of more than 400 km, which amounts to 61 percent of the projects. Besides, it opened 40 multi-level intersections as well as 242 km of bike tracks and 242 km of pedestrian paths. In road sector, G Ring Road was opened along with the middle stage of Dukhan Highway, the southern part of Doha Expressway (parallel to Al Wakrah Road), Hamad Port Road, in addition to the first phase of Al Rayyan Road, the first phase of the Orbital Highway, major parts of the extension of Rawdat Al Khail Street and Lusail Expressway.

The Department of Road Maintenance continued to carry out repair works on internal roads in some residential areas and completed the project to enhance traffic safety in and around schools, which has so far affected 384 out of 393 schools. Furthermore, 15 local road projects were completed this year, including the conversion of Olympic and Television roundabouts to signalised intersections, development of roads and infrastructure in the Old Airport area, Najma Street, E Ring Road and Ali bin Abi Talib Street, in addition to a number of road improvement projects inside and outside Doha and the establishment of temporary roads in Al Khor and Al Dhakhira.

Ashghal also completed 23 infrastructure projects in East Al Aziziyah (main streets), Bani Hajer, Rawdat Ekdeem, Aba Al Hayran and Al Sailiya to serve 15,108 housing units. It carried out infrastructure development projects in West Al Mashaf and North Al Wukair. Expected to be ready this year, the projects serve a total of 1,829 housing plots for citizens. Moreover, another 25 projects are currently underway to develop roads and infrastructure in different areas of the country, including West Muaither, Al Froush, Al Kharaitiyat, North Al Nasiriyah and Al Kheesa. Most of these projects will be completed in the next three years. Regarding achievements in the building sector, Ashghal delivered about 15 schools and kindergartens as well as 12 mosques and Quran memorisation centres this year. 

The authority also delivered three new health centres,including Muaither Center for Health and Wellness, Al Wajba Center for Health and Wellness and Al Waab Health Center, in addition to the Simulation Center for Professional Education and the Aquatic Life Research Center in Ras Mutbakh to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. Ashghal has completed 16 projects to connect homes to the main sewage network in different parts of the country. Over the past three years (2015-2017), the authority has connected 2,000 houses and buildings with major sewage networks. Ashghal hosted an array of cultural activities at a heritage village to mark Qatar National Day recently.
