Process safety experts will gather at the Intercontinental Doha Hotel for the opening of the ninth annual Qatar Process Safety Symposium (QPSS) on April 8-9, 2018. Hosted by ConocoPhillips and Texas A&M University at Qatar, QPSS is the premiere process safety event in the region, bringing together experts from the oil and gas industry, academics, students, and regulatory institutions.

Under this year’s theme of “Emergency Preparedness,” attendees will have the opportunity to share knowledge, experience, and discuss ways in which the concepts surrounding process safety can be elevated both in Qatar and beyond.

Todd Creeger, president of ConocoPhillips Qatar, preparing for another consecutive year of participation at QPSS, said: “Safety is a cornerstone in our industry, and is integral to Qatar’s long-term sustainable growth and development. We have not only created a locally-led, regionally renowned initiative in QPSS, but the symposium has become instrumental in facilitating necessary knowledge sharing in our industry; enabling a firm understanding of the global energy landscape, and speaks to the importance of bi-lateral relations between the US and Qatar.”

In 2011, ConocoPhillips and Texas A&M at Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish QPSS as a pinnacle event amongst the local process safety community. The MoU was renewed last year for a five-year period. QPSS is the only event of its kind in Qatar and looks to address development goals set forth by Qatar National Vision 2030. H.E. Dr. Ali Al Mulla, assistant secretary general for Industrial Projects Sector at the Gulf Organization of Industrial Consulting (GOIC), is due to give the keynote address, marking the official opening of the symposium.

More than 200 regional and international experts, professionals, academics, and decision makers representing both the public and private spheres are expected to attend QPSS this year, with many distinguished members from the organizing entities planning to speak during plenary sessions. Dr. César O. Malavé, Dean of Texas A&M at Qatar, will represent the university.

“We are very proud to bring this essential process safety expertise to Qatar through the QPSS and of our long-term partnership with ConocoPhillips,” Malave said. “Through industry and academic collaboration, we collectively advance our understanding and encourage the next generation of leaders in the industry to practice diligence and responsibility. We encourage our students to embrace the opportunity this event presents, allowing them to hear first-hand from leading local and international subject matter experts on a field that is fundamental to our success on a professional and personal level.”

The first day of the symposium will include discussions on process safety management, research, and technologies. Dirk Faveere, vice president of Health, Safety, and Environment at ConocoPhillips, will deliver the keynote presentation on emergency response preparedness. With 28 years of experience, Faveere will explore ConocoPhillips’ approach to training employees, reflecting on the importance of building capacity to ensure responders’ skills and to minimize incident impacts.

Dr. Geoffrey Maitland, professor of Energy Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London, and former president of the UK Institution of Chemical Engineers, will kick off the second day. Amongst other accomplishments, Dr. Maitland chaired the independent review of the U.K. Offshore Oil and Gas Regulatory Regime known as The Maitland Report. Also of note, Dr. Scott Davis will present on lessons learned from his incident investigation experience. As a member of Gexon, a leading safety and risk management company, Dr. Davis performs consultation, accident investigation, and failure analysis for offshore installations and petrochemical facilities.

Process safety has been very actively promoted by Texas A&M at Qatar in the country since 2013, through the branch campus’ Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center – Qatar (MKOPSC-Q), which organizes QPSS every year with ConocoPhillips. Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the Center was launched under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Qatar’s Minister of Energy & Industry, to promote a holistic understanding of process safety.

A total of 21 speakers from 16 companies will participate to the event. The symposium will also include the QPSS Process Safety Excellence Award presentation, bestowed annually upon an exemplary ambassador of process safety in the industry.
