ExxonMobil Qatar extended a special recognition for its local education partners during a gala dinner held in Doha late last week. The event took place during the fourth Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy – a joint collaboration between the National Center for Educator Development, Qatar University (QU) and ExxonMobil Qatar that is held in Doha on an annual basis.

QU; Teach for Qatar; the Supreme Education Council (SEC); INJAZ Qatar; Qatar Foundation; WISE; Teaching and Learning Department; and Qatar Petroleum were honored guests at the event. A special video created for the evening captured the collaboration between ExxonMobil Qatar and each respective organization.

The event also marked the conclusion of this year’s Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy, and was attended by the 50 primary school teachers who took part in the week-long innovative professional development program specially designed to enhance their math and science teaching skills.Their participation was determined through a selection process conducted by QU and the SEC, ensuring that both qualified and committed teachers participated in the academy. Maharaty, an initiative by Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani, also assigned 10 grade three science and math teachers to attend the academy.

As was the case at last year’s academy, the NCED- College of Education at Qatar University provided math and science specialists who attended the entire week of events and gave the teachers direct insight into its mission. Alistair Routledge, President and General Manager for ExxonMobil Qatar, extended a warm welcome to the gala dinner guests, and thanked the company’s education partners for their outstanding efforts and continuous support.

“For the past couple of years, ExxonMobil Qatar has focused its community outreach programs on educational development through our national strategy,” Routledge said. “We believe it is our responsibility to support and improve education because of the crucial role it plays in the wider development of society. Education is economic destiny – and quality education helps citizens work together to create strong, capable and prosperous societies. We are honored and grateful for the support of our partners who are with us tonight, and who share the common goal of building a sustainable future for our children.”

QU President Dr. Hassan Al-Derham commented: “The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy serves as a platform to engage educators in professional development, and to equip them with the skills and confidence they need to motivate their students and encourage them to become active learners and pursue careers in math and science. This highlights QU’s pivotal role as a driving force for the development of the education sector in Qatar, which is an essential pillar of the country’s ambitions towards a knowledge-based economy. It also reflects the organization’s ongoing mission to shape a cadre of excellent teachers and educators whose work will help to advance the goals outlined in the National Vision and human development strategies.”

For many years, ExxonMobil Qatar has partnered with QU and other local entities to invest in educational development in Qatar through a variety of projects and programs. This support highlights ExxonMobil Qatar’s commitment to driving human potential across the country.

In line with this commitment, in 2012, ExxonMobil Qatar launched its flagship professional development program, the Tamayoz training program, which was created to share ExxonMobil’s technical, commercial and operational expertise with Qatar’s workforce, in support of the Qatar National Vision 2030. To date, nearly 1,800 individuals representing the company’s industry partner Qatar Petroleum and joint ventures RasGas and Qatargas have received training through the program.

Improving educational programs worldwide to enhance math and science skills is a priority issue for ExxonMobil. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills are the fundamental building blocks of individual opportunity and economic growth, and they are critical to ensuring today’s students are prepared for the jobs of the 21st century.
