500 delegates set for Doha Exhibition Center on 2-4 March

Under the Patronage of HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the first Green Building Solutions Conference & Exhibition Doha 2011 from 2nd to 4th March 2011 has announced a stellar line-up of expert speakers representing the cream of the regional and international sustainable development and green building industries.

Inspired by a theme of ‘Creating a Green Legacy for Future Generations’, GBS 2011 demonstrates Qatar’s deep concern for environmental issues as authorities show strong commitment towards environment protection and preservation, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, Heir Apparent of the State of Qatar to make the country a regional role model on sustainable development and climate change issues.

The high profile Keynote Speakers includes 2022 Government Representative and Host Sponsor (Barwa Real Estate / Qatari Diar / Lusail City).

Highlighting the ability of GBS 2011 to attract green building visionaries from the GCC and overseas is a prestigious Conference Speaker list featuring Dr. Adel Aldosari, Head of City and Regional Planning, King Fahed University (KSA); Koh Lin Ji, Director, International Development Division-Building and Construction Authority (Singapore);  Dr. Ali Malkawi, Director, TC Chan Center, University of Pennsylvania (USA); Dr. Djamel Ouharani, Assistant Professor of Architecture, Qatar University, and Dr. Saffa Riffat, Head, Institute of Building Technology, University of Nottingham (UK).

As urbanization continues to be a strong and unstoppable trend, GBS 2011 features three keynote sessions plus a Master Class focusing on how to build cities that are enjoyable to live in, resource-effective and which support human and environmental health, rather than becoming harmful to both.

Session 1 Sustainable Urbanization: Global and Local Perspectives asks as cities move to the forefront of global socio-economic change, with half of the world’s population now living in urban areas and the other half increasingly dependent upon cities for their economic, social and political progress, what threats and opportunities does urbanization present to sustainable development at the local, national, and global level.

Session 2 Sustainable Building Typologies: Residential, Educational, Commercial and Hotels examines the need for green building systems and regulations in the construction industry as Qatar steps up infrastructure development in preparation to host the FIFA World Cup 2022. The debate is expected to focus on Qatar’s own Qatar Sustainable Assessment System (QSAS), the only green building rating systems designed specifically to meet the needs of Qatar and the Gulf region.

Session 3 Products and Solutions for Sustainable Construction explores the environmental, social and financial benefits of choosing sustainable products and solutions in Qatar’s future projects. Learn from product manufacturers, engineers and research institutions just exactly which sustainable products are best suited to Qatar’s challenging environmental conditions.

GBS 2011 delegates also benefit from the opportunity to attend a Master Class in sustainable Lighting and Energy solutions led by the BQDRI’s Paul Sherbo, Associate QSAS CGP and Director, International Business Development.

The Green Building Solutions 2011 Conference features interactive debate as 500 top-level local and international construction and environment experts present an inspiring series of workshops, presentations and speeches, including a workshop introducing delegates to the Qatar Sustainability Assessment System (QSAS).

“The aim of GBS 2011 is to enhance Qatar National Vision 2030 in line with HH The Emir’s instructions and make Qatar the capital of green building,” says Dr. Youssef Al-Horr, Founder and Managing Director of the BARWA and Qatari Diar Research Institute.

“Green Building Solutions 2011 will take the lead in the sustainability sector, promoting the partnership between the private and public sectors to create sustainable solutions to tackle the crucial challenges of our time,” says Qatar Expo CEO Karim Zarka.
