The Qatar Museums Authority in partnership with the UK’s Little Angel Theatre and the Qatar National Theatre in Doha is bringing the puppet play Handa’s Surprise to Qatar.

The puppet performance is based on a much loved children’s book by Eileen Browne and has been especially crafted for young children with their families. Browne’s story touches on themes such as friendship while stimulating inquiry and creativity. It also opens up young children’s eyes to how much is out there in the world.

It is also important for children to witness children in worlds outside Qatar, to see how they problem solve, while encouraging children in Qatar to solve their own problems.’ Mazna AL Mari, Museum Specialist, Qatar Museums Authority.

Both the Little Angel Theatre and the Qatar National Theatre have a long tradition of creating works for the public. Set in the historic Qatar National Theatre building, Handa’s Surprise will send visitors to Handa’s African world in Kenya just as she is about to take a basket of fruits as a surprise for her best friend. As she embarks on her journey, a mischievous collection of animals have other plans for the tasty ripe fruits.

This charming tale for young children is brought to life by two multi-talented performers who combine wooden puppets and ingenious props with African instruments and songs to create a wonderful atmosphere.

‘We want to create quality theatrical experiences for young children as well as nurture a love of the performance arts. We want children with their families to participate in imaginative literary experiences.’ Nasira Sheikh-Miller, Head of Learning Projects, Qatar Museums Authority.
