Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Al Faisal Without Borders Foundation (Alf), last night jointly launched two very important campaigns - the Ramadan Voluntary Blood Donation campaign and the National Organ Donation campaign.

The two campaigns were officially launched by His Excellency Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Alf at City Center Doha, Doha’s busiest and most vibrant mall. Hamad Medical Corporation representatives present at the campaign launch ceremony included Mr. Ali Al Khater, Chief Communications Officer, Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Medical Director of Hamad General Hospital, Dr. Abdulla Al Ansari, Deputy Chief of Medical, Academic and Research Affairs for Surgical Services, Dr. Riadh Fadhil, Director of Qatar Organ Donation Center, Mr. Hassan Al–Hail, Executive Director for Media and Public Relations, and Ms. Siddiqa Al-Mahmoudi, Medical Manager of HMC’s Blood Donor Center. Abdullatif Ali Al-Yafei, General Manager of ALF, was also present at the event.

The Blood Donation Campaign aims to sustain voluntary blood donation, maintaining sufficient stock of blood and blood products to meet Qatar’s healthcare requirements by encouraging the public to donate blood while the Organ Donation Campaign is intended to attract individuals to sign up as organ donors and to promote the culture of organ donation in society. The joint campaign has achieved remarkable success over the past years, succeeding in attracting a large number of blood and organ donors. The Blood Donation Center and Qatar Organ Donation Center at HMC usually organize blood and organ donation campaigns in Ramadan, making good use of the many events held during the Holy Month across various cultural, social and youth centers frequented by members of the public. HMC officials expressed their appreciation to His Excellency Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, as well as local organizations and shopping malls which sponsor and host the campaigns throughout Ramadan.

Speaking to the press at the event, Sheikh Faisal said: “We always strive to facilitate and extend services to the community in City Center Mall in partnership with HMC through an annual stand to promote blood and organ donation. These joint efforts stem from the commitment to social responsibility of both organizations and come in the context of achieving the Qatar Vision 2030.” Following the inauguration of the annual Ramadan Center at City Center Doha, Sheikh Faisal said: “This Center is intended to deliver recreational activities such as story-telling, Qaranqao celebrations on the 14th day of Ramadan - a Qatari Heritage festivity, and learning through fun, as well as educational activities, all in an interactive style.

Many values, including social responsibility and exemplary practices are promoted at the Center where children are introduced to concepts such as recycling. The Center also has a section for identifying gifted children, following up on their development with parents and the relevant authorities. Speaking about the partnership with HMC, Sheikh Faisal said that HMC is central to the blood donation campaign. The total number of blood donors last year reached 26,000 donors - a clear testimony to HMC’s success in nurturing a blood-donation culture in Qatar.

Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Director of the Qatar Organ Transplant Center at HMC, said: “I would like to invite the public to visit one of the organ donation stands during the evenings, throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, to learn more about organ donation and transplantation. Those who are interested will have the opportunity to register as donors.” Dr. Riadh Fadhil, Director of the Qatar Organ Donation Center at HMC, said: "The main objectives of this campaign are to increase awareness within the community about organ donation; to increase the number of registered donors; and to hopefully reduce any concerns or misconceptions that people may have regarding organ donation and transplantation services in Qatar.”

Mr. Ali Al Khater, Chief Communications Officer at HMC praised the continued support extended to HMC by His Excellency Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani and Alf for the blood donation campaign and various other community initiatives. He said: “We at HMC are always eager to co-operate with well-meaning organizations such as the Al Faisal Without Borders Foundation on important public health awareness campaigns such as organ and blood donation and we thank them for their support. We also thank everyone who has supported these campaigns so far and hope that others are also inspired to donate and give the gift of life.”

Ms. Siddiqa Al-Mahmoudi, Medical Manager of HMC’s Blood Donor Center, affirmed that the blood donation campaigns launched in Ramadan each year contribute to meeting the blood stock target for all blood groups. She highlighted that thanks to HMC’s relentless efforts, the community in Qatar is increasingly becoming blood-donation conscious.
