As part of its commitment to support the technological needs of people with hearing impairments, Mada (Qatar Assistive Technology Center) will be organizing a technology night at the Qatar Social Cultural Club for the Deaf. Members of the Club will meet with AT Specialists from Mada to discuss the latest technologies that support the needs of deaf and low hearing people in accessing the world of digital content.

Text based communication tools, induction loops for hearing aid users, and closed captioning for video content are some of the technologies that are used by deaf people to communicate with each other. Although many of these solutions can be taken “off the shelf” and customized, there are some that require changes to the ICT infrastructure in Qatar.

Mada recently consulted the Qatar Telecommunications Company (Qtel) and the Ministry of Interior of Qatar to establish an accessible video relay calling center for emergency services. This would enable callers to contact police, ambulance, and the fire department using sign language. An operator would receive the video calls and communicate the sign language requests to the relevant official.

Mada will be present at the Qatar Social Cultural Club for the Deaf (QSCCD) on 20th of February between 7pm and 9pm.
