Maersk Oil Qatar’s latest Sustainability Report (2014), reinforces the company’s commitment to support the long-term development of Qatar and reports on its environmental, health and safety performance in the last calendar year, as well as outlining the various ways the company is contributing to Qatar’s social and economic development.

Managing Director, Lewis Affleck, says, “As operator of Qatar’s largest offshore oil field - the Al Shaheen - for over 20 years, we take our responsibility to support the long-term sustainable development of Qatar very seriously. While our focus remains on the safe, sustainable extraction of hydrocarbons with minimum environmental impact, we constantly seek to broaden and deepen our partnerships to deliver meaningful and positive long-term societal impacts.”

Highlights from the Maersk Oil Qatar 2014 Sustainability Report within each pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030 include:


·          safe and reliable delivery of around 300,000 bopd

·          continuing investment in local goods and services with around USD $962 million spent in 2014

·          63% of all goods and services were sourced locally


·          screening more than 18,000 people for diabetes (more than double the amount in 2013), and training some 470 healthcare professionals via our Action for Qatar social investment programme


·          receiving the ‘Best overall support to Qatarization’ annual award for our efforts in 2014

·          making headway with local partners in helping Qatar’s youth build rewarding career pathways via dedicated youth leadership programmes and initiatives - focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines


·          recertifying its environmental management system to the ISO 14001:2014 international standard

·          opening a Digital Core Laboratory – the first of its kind in the Middle East – at the Maersk Oil Research and Technology Centre, Qatar to further our unique understanding of the Al Shaheen field

A socially responsible operator

Maersk Oil Qatar’s 2014 report demonstrates how the company’s social investment programme, called ‘Action for Qatar’, is gaining pace in addressing some of the biggest challenges facing Qatari society, from tackling diabetes to encouraging education in science and engineering, and from mapping and protecting marine life to building necessary skills for the next generation of Qataris to become business leaders. In the realms of health, the ‘Action on Diabetes’ programme (which Maersk Oil is a founding partner and funder of) continued its screening and education programmes; conducted in-depth research; ran awareness campaigns; and provided specialised diabetes training for health care professionals.

Education was another prominent focus area for Maersk Oil Qatar’s social investment programme. The company supported and partnered with various local and international institutions to promote career opportunities in the energy industry and develop local skills and capacities – all with a special focus on STEM and leadership development. Some of these initiatives included, the GO ROBOT schools programme, in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic, the EBDA student leadership development programme with Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Qatar University’s Al Baraiq programme. All of which support the development of high-school and foundation year students’ science skills.

In partnership with the Ministry of Interior, Maersk Oil Qatar sustained its commitment to the ‘One Second’ National road safety brand and programme, supporting Qatar’s National Road Safety Strategy. One Second related activities focused on educating and raising awareness of road safety among children and students, including the importance of wearing seat-belts. “By listening to and working in close partnership with our stakeholders in Qatar, we are building a legacy together - making a long-term contribution to health, the environment and education – and delivering a real and lasting impact on the lives of people in Qatar,” Lewis Affleck, Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar explains.

Contributing to the local economy and national development

Further developing the local Qatar economy through employment, skills development, training, supporting local enterprise and hiring local contractors was another focus area. In 2014, Maersk Oil Qatar spent around USD $962 million on goods and services sourced locally, which accounts for 63% of our total spend. Recruiting, retaining and developing Qatari Nationals was also a key focus area, with a steady increase in the number of Qataris employed year-on-year. At the end of 2014, 215 Qataris were employed, and they now make up around 23% of the Company’s employees.

“Qatarization is of utmost importance and our focus is on nurturing local talent for the future of Qatar. We work to develop capacity, as well as providing opportunities and an attractive working environment for Qatari nationals,” Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Al Thani, Deputy Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar, explains.

Protecting its people

In terms of the health and safety, the report shows that employees and contractors worked 9.8 million man-hours at Maersk Oil Qatar in 2014, resulting in a lost-time injury frequency (LTIF) rate of 0.61per million man-hours across all operations - a LTIF rate that remains better than the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) industry benchmark, and better than the previous year. “The safety of our workforce is paramount: we strive to do everything we can to protect our people, the environment in which we operate, and our assets. We know that safe operations are successful and sustainable operations, and we are fully committed to operating to as high a standard of safety as possible,” explains Mr Affleck.

In 2014 Maersk Oil Qatar made it mandatory that all employees and contractors must complete their ‘Incident Free’ behaviours based safety programme before travelling offshore. The Incident Free programme seeks to ensure that all personnel share a common Incident-free mind-set, culture and approach. 

Environmental commitment

Maersk Oil Qatar continued to integrate environmental considerations into its operations, and in January 2014 the Maersk Oil Qatar Environmental Management System (EMS) was audited externally and successfully re-certified to the ISO14001: 2014 International Standard.

In 2014 Maersk Oil Qatar continued to work on the Qatar Whale Shark Research Project and its partnership with Qatar University (QU) on a Produced Water Reinjection Research programme, as part of a two-year agreement signed in 2013. The research project involves Maersk Oil installing a new pilot wastewater treatment test facility (delivered in 2015) at QU and will advance the University’s objective to be a leading institution of research excellence in this field.
