The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) is organizing a one-day Forum on “Statistics and Development in Qatar - Data Availability Challenges”  on December 10, 2013, at the Four Seasons Hotel (pictured), to celebrate Qatar’s Statistics Day and the 2013 International Year of Statistics.This flagship event is being held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Prime Minister and Interior Minister of the State of Qatar.The Forum will be opened by H.E.Dr. Saleh bin Mohamed Al Nabit, the Minister of Development Planning and Statistics. Some 300 senior officials from the public and private sector, from academia, research institutes, and non-governmental organizations (NGOS) are expected to attend the Forum.

Eminent experts from international, regional and national organizations will,through their presentations,provide examples of good practices in official statistics, stress the importance of adhering to the United Nations Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics, highlight the need to modernize the statistical system, and prepare for the Post 2015 International Development Agenda.Officials from Qatar will provide various examples of uses of statistical data for the formulation of sectorial strategies and the challenges they face in the implementation process and in the availability of relevant statistics or indicators.

The outcome of this forum and feedback received from participants will provide the Ministry of Planning Development and Statistics with a clear vision and an insight into the various domains of statistics and indicators. Such information will prove helpful for the  preparation of the 2ndgeneration of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) in Qatar.
