Mowasalat’s massive, purpose-built QR400mn Karwa Housing City, capable of eventually accommodating about 10,000 at a time was formally dedicated to the country yesterday by Minister of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning HE Sheikh Abdurrahman bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani.

After the inauguration, the minister, accompanied by Mowasalat chairman Jassim Saif al-Sulaiti and the company’s senior officials, went on a tour of inspection in the complex.

The sprawling integrated city, spread over an area of 500,000sq m, is the first of its kind in the country built by a local company to house an overwhelming majority of its drivers and other maintenance staffers. Workers have been staying in the complex for about a year now, inquiries found. The minister also inaugurated the company’s public transport monitoring system. Company sources said the project was executed in a short period to coincide with the formal launch of the Karwa City.

Besides quality residential accommodation, the township boasts of a mosque, shopping centres, vast areas for parking of the company fleet, a huge dining facility which could feed at least 800 people at one time, telephone booths, a gymnasium and fitness centre, ATMs and convenience shops.

Among the main attractions of the housing community are the recreational and entertainment avenues for the workers. “Efforts have been made to ensure that every community staying in the city could watch television channels in its own mother tongue,” said a company official.

Each of the 10 residential blocks in the city has three floors, including the ground floor, spread out in an area of more than 4.000sq m. Every block is also equipped with control rooms to monitor the fleet movement. Inquiries with the company officials revealed that the second phase of expansion of the city has begun and more features would be incorporated to the city in the coming years.

The complex also houses a training centre for drivers. Later speaking to journalists, Minister HE Sheikh Abdurrahman said that the residential accommodation provided to the Mowasalat drivers is among the best of its kind in the Middle East. The company’s commitment to improve the living environs of its workers is very much reflected with the completion of such a massive housing community as Karwa city, said the minister.
