The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), along with its partners, has implemented many strategic initiatives to improve the health of the Qatari community. The ministry encourages the community to adopt healthy lifestyles and do regular physical exercise as per recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Qatar National Nutrition and Physical Activity Action Plan is one of the most prominent initiatives implemented by the ministry in this regard. The plan achieved several successes during 2019 and the most notable among them was the reduction of fat, sugar and salt quotient in food and beverages by engaging public and private sectors. The ministry also continues to implement the Health in the Workplace programme involving new entities in the programme, as well as the national programme for health in schools. The plan led to the imposition of a selective tax on soft drinks and energy drinks, training of health care providers on the nutrition guidelines, and launch of the school canteen guide to ensure the availability of healthy food and drinks for school students.

The implementation of the guidelines for foods and beverages in health facilities and workplaces is also being followed up to ensure the availability of healthy options. Furthermore, the ministry has implemented new growth plans for school students aged 5 to 19 years olds to monitor obesity rates. Meanwhile, within the framework of the recommendations of the National Plan for Nutrition and Physical Activity in 2020, a healthy cookbook containing more than 70 healthy recipes for popular and other foods will be prepared and printed free of charge.

The Ministry of Public Health and its partners are working to implement the National Health Strategy 2018-2022. The goals of the National Health Strategy include increasing years of life by one year for the population aged 65 years and above, in addition to reducing tobacco consumption rate by 5 percent, and achieving 100 percent of health promotion and disease prevention initiatives.
