Qatar’s very first International Boat Show (QIBS) is to feature another ‘first’ – the world premiere of a new string quartet, being performed at a special gala evening at the Show, and believed to be the first piece of music for a string quartet to be commissioned by an international maritime event.

Dr. Sophia Serghi, Professor of Music at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, USA and a founder of the Multi-Arts Crossings (MAX).

The world premiere of the new string quartet entitled ‘Power’, by world renowned composer, conductor and pianist Dr. Professor Sophia Serghi – who will also be conducting the work – will be performed live by the Doha String Quartet during a VIP reception at QIBS on November 13, 2013. The programme will also feature other original works by Dr. Sophia Serghi and will be followed by a VIP reception and an evening of classical music.

The Qatar International Boat Show 2013 promises to provide an industry-wide networking platform, generating solid opportunities for the promotion of new boats and services and creating a luxury market for affluent Middle Eastern and Asian buyers. QIBS will host events both on land and in the water, with around 100 international and local exhibitors attending, 150 boats on display, five global and regional launches and an estimated 15,000 visitors.

Dr. Sophia Serghi has composed stage, orchestral, chamber, vocal and multi-media works that have been performed globally. She holds a Doctorate in Music Composition and Theory from Columbia University in New York, and has been a Fulbright Scholar, a Mellon Fellow and a Cambridge University Faculty Fellow among others.

The Doha String Quartet features Nina Heidenreich, from Germany and Dmitri Torchinsky, from Russia, on violin; Romanian-born Andrea Mereutza, on viola; and Christoph Schmitz, from Venezuela, on the cello. All four members studied and worked in the UK,Germany, Portugal and Austria prior to being invited to join the Qatar Philharmonic.

Dr. Serghi explained “The QIBS-dedicated composition entitled ‘Power’ is a musical metaphor of the powerful propulsion of a super yacht, combined with the human discovery of inner power and strength.’’

Anna-Denise Ioannou, Managing Director of QIBS, said: “We have engaged Dr. Serghi, because the Show is all about unique experiences, worldwide firsts, international and regional launches and an event that combines luxury, industry know-how and culture. The parallels between the International Boat Show and this new composition are obvious and we are all looking forward to making history while enjoying what will surely be a highly memorable evening.”

The Qatar International Boat Show 2013, which is being organised by Snow Conceptual Communications in Doha, will take place from the 12-16 November at Lusail Marina, located within Lusail City.  The marina is operated by Dubai-based developer and manager Mourjan Marinas.
