The launch is part of implementation of Emiri Decision No. 76 of 2014 on operating the port to ease the entry and exit of vessels, goods, travellers and imports and exports and stimulate commercial exchange between countries of the region, said Abdulla Al Khanji, CEO, Qatar Ports Management. On the sidelines of the launch Al Khanji said work is being carried out in three phases. The first will be dedicated to wooden ships, supply vessels and services, he said, adding that work will start on the second phase by January 2016 and will be devoted to executing and operating the commercial port.

He said the port will be Qatar’s northern gate to the world and will serve as another commercial outlet along with Doha Port. Al Khanji said the third phase will see the deepening of the channel and the basins to receive commercial vessels and containers by the end of the project.
