Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), a member of Qatar Foundation, launched the ‘Green Life’ national sustainability campaign at the opening of Qatar Sustainability Week 2017.

Engineer Meshal Al Shamari, Director, QGBC, welcomed Green Life’s strategic partners: The National Programme for Conservation & Energy Efficiency ‘Tarsheed’, Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF), and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) – a QF partner university – at an official signing and launch of the national campaign at the Qatar National Convention Centre on October 29.

Green Life is the world’s first sustainability loyalty program. The national education campaign aims to raise public awareness on what it means to be ‘green’. The initiative uses the Green Life mobile application to personalize the concept in an effort to create community-driven sustainable lifestyles among Qatar’s residents. It is designed to demonstrate how sustainability can become part of everyday life, and how the public can get rewards by tracking their efforts. The application allows users to track their everyday green practices such as attending Qatar Sustainability Week events, purchasing products, and participating in initiatives. Users collect points which can then be redeemed for valuable rewards.

Engineer Al Shamari commented on the official launch, saying: “We’re thrilled to be launching the Green Life campaign and we’re very grateful to our strategic partners for helping to make it happen. This initiative aims to support Qatar’s commitment to sustainability practices and environmental protection in the nation’s transition to becoming a sustainable and diverse economy as set out in Qatar National Vision 2030. It is a demonstration of our commitment to creating a collaborative environment between members of the public and different industries to work together towards achieving the sustainability goals of the State of Qatar.”

Nesreen Al-Rifai, Chief Communications Officer at WCM-Q, said: "We’re delighted that ‘Sahtak Awalan: Your Health First’, the flagship public health campaign of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, has signed this progressive, forward-thinking MoU with Qatar Green Building Council. We share the view of Qatar Green Building Council that sustainable, environmentally-friendly buildings are essential to the promotion of good health in the community, and we encourage the younger generation to appreciate sustainable lifestyles through our very own Project Greenhouse initiative.

“Project Greenhouse has gifted free greenhouses, seeds, and gardening supplies to 130 schools across Qatar to teach children how to grow their own fruit and vegetables and to understand the importance of protecting the environment that we all depend upon. We look forward to working alongside Qatar Green Building Council towards our shared goals of sustainability and good health in line with the aims set out in Qatar National Vision 2030."

Engineer Abdulaziz Ahmed Al-Hammadi, Conservation and Energy Efficiency Manager at KAHRAMAA, said: “Tarsheed supports the comprehensive sustainability goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, especially in terms of the Environmental Development Pillar, by reducing the per-capita consumption of water and electricity through efficient consumption technologies, culture, and regulations application and development. Through Green Life, we join hands with QGBC, AZF, and WCM-Q to give a comprehensive perspective of sustainability from environmental, social, and human perspectives. This in turn will create a healthier environment and healthier citizens.”

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Nasser Abdullah Al-Hajri, Director of PR and Communication at AZF, said: “We’re pleased to sign this milestone agreement with Qatar Green Building Council. The MoU builds on Aspire Zone Foundation’s existing efforts to support environmental, social, and human development in Qatar. While fulfilling our mission of enhancing sports performance, we extend support to a wide range of environmental initiatives such as recycling as well as deploying eco-friendly solutions in various fields. The MoU will enable AZF’s employees to benefit from the Qatar Green Building Council’s expertise through customised training courses that focus on operating and maintaining green buildings, and corporate sustainability reporting. In addition, the Torch Doha Hotel has been chosen as the official venue for hosting Qatar Sustainability Week 2017. AZF will also collaborate with Qatar Green Building Council to support an innovative campaign which aims to spread awareness about a variety of sustainability activities among the community in Qatar.”
