European champions Germany beat World Championship silver medallists Qatar 34-22 in the quarterfinal of the men’s handball competition at the Future Arena here on Wednesday. The winners led 16-12 at the halfway mark.

Qatar earned their quarterfinal place with a victory against Argentina in round five, thanks largely to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Danijel Saric, who was the top-ranked custodian in the men’s competition at Rio Games. However, Germany had a strong goalkeeper of their own to cause trouble with Andreas Wolff being at his best in front of the goal. Earlier two-time defending champions France stayed in line for a hat-trick of Olympic titles after defeating Brazil 34-27 in the first quarterfinal. The teams were level at 16-16 at the end of the first half.
