On Sunday 17th of November, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Qatar Section, held its first Award Night event at the Sheraton Hotel Doha, which was attended by many oil and gas professionals and students from across Qatar.

Speaking at the event, Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Al-Thani, SPE Qatar Section Chairperson, Deputy Manager Director of Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ), said: “2015 was certainly a very successful year for the Qatar Section as the section received SPE Gold Standard Award, in recognition of its exceptional programs in industry engagement, operations and planning, community involvement, professional development and innovation.” In September 2015 Sheikh Faisal also became a recipient of the SPE Middle East Regional Service Award as an acknowledgment of his exceptional contributions to the SPE at section and regional levels and recognition of his devotion of time and effort to the programs and development of technical expertise.

The event was opened by Mr. Nayef Mohammed Al-Hajri, Asst. Manager Offshore Operation Oversight/Excellence, Qatar Petroleum (QP) who presented on the topic of the “Development of Knowledge / Best Practices Sharing Platform”. Mr. Al-Hajri explained how Qatar Petroleum has formed several best practice forums to share knowledge and experience amongst companies operating in Qatar. For example, the Offshore Operations forum was launched in order to achieve operation synergies and operation excellence.

Mr. Mike Gunningham, Program Chair of SPE Qatar Section, Head of Subsurface Support Team, Maersk Oil Qatar, presented “A Celebration of Success – SPE Qatar Section 2015” highlighting Section achievements of this year. Since January 2015, Qatar Section has held 17 events and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs declared the Section to be in top three among 25 Professional Societies in Qatar.

To mark these achievements Sheikh Faisal presented Qatar Section Awards to the following outstanding professional members and students: Mr. Jassim Al-Khori – MOQ, Mr. Ali Al-Mana – QP, Mr. Mike Gunningham – MOQ, Mr. Haytham Al-Meer - Qatar Gas, Mr. Elsiddig Elhafyan – student Texas A & M University, Mr. Ali Al-Obaidli – student, Qatar University, in recognition of their enthusiasm and great efforts in developing and conducting the Section’s programs and promoting the SPE values and mission.

In Qatar, there are over 437 professional members and over 159 student members at Qatar University and Texas A&M University, Qatar. As one of many sections worldwide, SPE Qatar Section's mission is to collect, disseminate and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources, and related technologies for the public benefits; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence.
