Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority and sister of the country's Emir, has been named one of the world’s most influential people by Time Magazine. Pop star Beyoncé landed the cover of Time magazine's annual ranking which also included US President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Vladimir Putin, Pope Francis and Miley Cyrus.

Sheikha Al Mayassa has long been considered a heavyweight in the art world and in 2012, she made her debut on Forbes' Most Powerful Women list. She was one of 41 women who made the list this year which set a new record for the number of females making the list. Last year she was named the new biggest player in the international art scene, spending $1bn annually on masterpieces.

According to The New York Times, Sheikha Al Mayassa has been buying art “at a level never seen before”. Many of Sheikha Al Mayassa’s purchases have set new records. In fact she is responsible for the highest known price ever paid for a painting - $250m for Cézanne’s ‘Card Players’. That is four times the highest known price. In a 2010 interview, Sheikha Al Mayassa said she believed that establishing art institutions might challenge Western preconceptions about Muslim societies. That year she also said art was a “very important” part of Qatar’s national identity.
