During Qatar’s most anticipated annual football tournament, the Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Shell today officially launched L’Batak, a high-tech football themed Fan Zone that will tour Qatar promoting the tournament but also encouraging youth to get active.

Offering a unique, flexible version of a modern-day fitness centre, L’Batak features a wide range of activities for participants, recreating cardio-based physical movements that would occur in a traditional gym environment, such as running, lunges, and squats, within a football themed space. Activities include freestyle kicks, goal scoring and football related computer games, amongst others. An automated counter is used to calculate scores and display the total number of calories burnt for each participant.

L’Batak, which is part of the broader KOORA TIME initiative announced by the QFA and Qatar Shell earlier this year, is targeted at youth aged 13 – 17 across Qatar and is designed to promote greater physical activity amongst the youth. L’Batak is launched during HH the Emir’s cup, of which Qatar Shell has been the lead sponsor for eight consecutive years.

“Since the launch of KOORA TIME, we have introduced a number of creative football related initiatives, all designed to further our ultimate goal of motivating, facilitating and educating Qatari youth to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle through football. We are therefore proud to launch L’Batak, which is the latest addition to our string of successes, at one of the most prized national football events of the year. As an interactive roadshow, offering something for everyone, we are convinced that L’Batak will have a direct, positive impact on the teenage population in Qatar,” said Mr. Ahmed Abdulaziz Al Buainain, Treasurer,  QFA.

“The Emir Cup is a period of national pride for Qatar – and there could have been no better moment to launch a program like L’Batak, which will give young people nationwide the opportunity to keep fit through more football, leading in turn to healthier youth, and a better future for Qatar. Innovation is key to all of Shell’s business in Qatar, so it is appropriate that this football themed Fan Zone L’Batak will be innovative, hi-tech, and of course fun – hopefully showing participants that   physical activity isn’t a chore – but a part of maintaining good health and an active lifestyle on a daily basis,” said Rob Sherwin, Deputy Country Chairman of Qatar Shell Companies.

L’Batak is yet another step forward in the KOORA TIME movement, through which we aim to inspire behavioural change towards health and fitness through football in line with our support to Qatar National Vision 2030,” added Sherwin. The launch of L’Batak also saw children from Al Khor School participating in the fun packed activities, encouraging them to get active.

Over the course of the HH Emir Cup 2013, the QFA and Qatar Shell will be operating two main Fan Zones; located in Al Khor Mall and in Khalifa Stadium, where the tournament’s final match will take place next week.
