‘Don’t Wait for Symptoms!’ is the message that is continuing to reverberate around Qatar during May as ‘Screen For Life’, Qatar’s National Breast and Bowel Cancer Screening program, continues to drive bowel cancer awareness across the country. The decision of campaign extension came as a result of high community engagement and immense demand on screening.

The extension of the awareness drive follows a hugely successful month-long campaign to mark Bowel Cancer Awareness Month to educate people of Qatar that because bowel cancer can be a non-symptomatic illness it is paramount to not wait until you feel the symptoms and to undergo screening as a precautionary measure.

The ‘Don’t Wait for Symptoms’ messaging continues to reach the people of Qatar during May through a widespread campaign incorporating advertisements in the  print media, on TV and in malls, and awareness messages on national radio. Other activities continued also during May like awareness lectures and registration desks where a nurse was present to explain the bowel cancer screening test using the FIT kit as demonstration. During these activities, educational material was distributed in addition to the Program’s newsletter, which is a quarterly publication that incudes the latest news and activities of the Program.

The initiatives will highlight the benefits of screening in the early detection of cancer and potential to save lives. The public are also reminded that they can carry out the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) test with ease in the privacy of their own home and they can collect their complementary kit from one of the PHCC screening centers. “The campaign throughout Bowel Cancer Awareness Month was a great success and exceeded expectations. The ‘Don’t Wait for Symptoms’ strong messaging clearly resonated with a great number of people, and we identified an opportunity to maximize its reach and extend the campaign in May to further raise awareness of the ‘Screen For Life’ objectives and the benefits of taking a proactive approach to one’s health,” said Dr Shaikha Abu Shaikha,” Cancer Program Manager, PHCC.

The campaign throughout May is continuing to remind men and women in the target age range of 50-74 not to wait and to get a free screening at one of the ‘Screen For Life’ facilities at Al Wakra, Lebaib and Rawdat Al Khail Health Centers.
