His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, visited the headquarters of the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ on Sunday 27 December, 2017, during which a comprehensive review of Ashghal’s achievements in the current year was presented, in addition to discussing the Public Works Authority’s plan for infrastructure and public buildings projects in 2018.

On this occasion, H.E. Dr. Eng. Saad bin Ahmad Al Muhannadi, President of the Public Works Authority, said that H.E. the Prime Minister’s keenness and the support given to the authority and its projects strengthens our determination to carry out Ashghal’s mission with the highest quality and according to the planned schedules. H.E. Ashghal President thanked all ministries and service institutions for their support and cooperation with the Public Works Authority in the implementation of its projects. H.E. Ashghal President added that QR 21.8 billion were allocated to the implementation of Ashghal’s projects during 2018, including expressway projects worth QR 11.08 billion, infrastructure and local roads projects worth QR 8.88 billion, and QR 1.84 billion for sewage treatment plans and assets projects.

H.E. pointed out that Ashghal completed in 2017 more than what was achieved during the previous four years (2013-2016) in all sectors in Ashghal, and that more than 60% of what was achieved in 2017 was carried out after last June. H.E. added that, in 2018, 90% of projects related to the 2022 World Cup will be completed. In regards of infrastructure projects, H.E Ashghal President noted that the provision of infrastructure in residential and citizens’ sub-divisions, is a priority of the Public Works Authority, and in implementation of H.E the Prime Minister directives to add new areas to the plan of developing infrastructure in citizens sub-divisions areas, Around five thousand additional land plots will be provided with infrastructure.

H.E. added, in 2018 we will start implementing 19 infrastructure projects in 12 areas; to serve 15,108 land plots, of which 1,800 plots are for new citizens’ sub-divisions, Ashghal will also complete 11 infrastructure projects in 11 areas, to serve 5,644 land plots, including 837 for new citizens’ sub-divisions. HE Ashghal President stated that in 2018, Ashghal will start implementing 17 road projects, including Al Furousiya Street, A-Ring Road, B-Ring Road, Wholesale Market Street, Al Maadeed Street, Al Khufoos Street, Umm Al Doom Street, Muaither Street And Al Shafi street. The plan will also include turning roundabouts to signalised junctions.

In terms of the expressway projects, HE the President of Ashghal hinted that Ashghal would complete 113 km long of new highways in 2018, involving 20 interchanges, 210 km long cycling and foot paths, and would kick off a new major expressway project to decongest traffic on 22 February Road. Regarding drainage projects, the President pointed out that drainage works of 279 locations in different areas had been accomplished in 2017 to reduce storming water there. “Four new projects dedicated for pumping stations, sewage treatment and Al Karaana wastewater landfill reclamation and rehabilitation will go ahead in 2018, along with the completion of other three projects”, he added.

For building projects, HE the President revealed that Ashghal had concluded the construction of 14 mosques, three health centres and 16 schools in 2017. “There are other underway projects to be accomplished in 2018, featuring 9 general, educational and health facilities. Moreover, Ashghal will embark on new works, including anti- fire school expansions, Al Jameaa Health Centre, the new HMC emergency building and the revamp of the corniches of Doha, Al Khor and Al Wakra.”, Al Muhannadi added.

Encouraging the local manufacturers and contractors and raising their share in the projects, the President of Ashghal stated that new projects for small business people will be put out in implementation of HE Prime Minister, noting that 47 factories and 54 local products had been qualified and ratified as part of Ta’heel initiative since its launching last July, aimed at giving priority to Qatari manufacturers and national product. “Fresh necessary measures will be taken to stimulate the local consultants to share in the project supervision contracts, as well.’’, Al Muhannadi added.
