In the framework of its commitment to support Qatari youth development, connect with the community and reinforce its position as an Employer of Choice, Vodafone Qatar has recently partnered with Bedaya Centre for Entrepreneurship and Career Development.

Bedaya Center for Entrepreneurship and Career Development was established in September 2011 as a joint initiative between Qatar Development Bank and Silatech. Today, Bedaya is a destination for entrepreneurial and career development services in Qatar. In collaboration with Bedaya Center, Vodafone hosted 12 high school and undergraduate Qatari students in the company’s Human Resources, Commercial and Finance departments. Students were introduced to Vodafone with a ‘Welcome Day’ Induction program, after which they moved on to shadow their assigned hosts.

During their Job Shadow programme, students got the chance to receive first-hand information from Vodafone staff both at the workplace and offsite when required. This opportunity allowed them to see what it is like to be part of one of the most valuable telecom brands in the world and how Vodafone team applies global best practices to their speciality areas to ensure they raise the bar of the industry, through The Vodafone Way. Haeefa Al-Malki, Qatarisation Manager at Vodafone Qatar, said: “We want to be an admired company. Admired by our customers, our shareholders, the people we work with and the communities where we work. We launched The Vodafone Way in 2009 to help us achieve this.

The Vodafone Way is how we do things at Vodafone and it makes us unique. The Vodafone Way is what makes us stand out from the rest. It helps us achieve our business objectives, deliver to our customers and realise our ambition to be a truly admired company. Over the last three years, we’ve held numerous workshops to create a common understanding across the Vodafone leadership population of how it looks and feels to work and lead in The Vodafone Way and this is the workplace culture we bring to new talent, interns or Job Shadow students.”

Reem Al-Sowaidi, Manager of the Bedaya Center for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (Bedaya Center), said: “We are so proud of the collaboration with Vodafone Qatar, and we are looking to build a sustainable partnership with Vodafone. Bedaya Center has introduced Job Shadowing to over 300 Qatari students over the past two years as a highly effective tool for on-the-job learning, career development and leadership development. It is a key work experience option that helps students develop their knowledge and skills and absorb the values and standards of an organisation to prepare them for the future.”

The Vodafone Way is underlined by the following key traits: every Vodafone talent must be customer-obsessed; innovation hungry; ambitious & competitive; reflecting the One Company, Global Roots image; working with Speed, Simplicity & Trust; and being an Admired Leader.

“We’re at our best when you’re at yours. This is what drives our Employer Brand. The great thing about technology isn’t how big, fast or clever it is – it’s about the great things you can do by having it at your fingertips. It’s about how it can empower people to connect, to achieve things or try them for the first time. This motivates us to put people at the forefront of our brand communications – by using our technology to improve people’s lives, we connect with the communities that we’re part of. We want to tell real stories about real people, showing how telecoms have empowered them in real-life situations. This is about people at their best, using our technology and solutions to make the most of their lives. Vodafone’s Employer Brand is centered on our best practices for the recruitment, engagement and retention approaches we have in place and we firmly believe we are one of the most attractive workplace cultures in Qatar.”

At the end of the Job Shadow programme, students got back together for a feedback and closing session during which they expressed their admiration of the Vodafone Way and culture and showed interest in further opportunities with Vodafone. In addition to the Job Shadow programme, Vodafone has recently participated at Qatar University’s Career Forum and the Education City Career Fair at which Vodafone’s HR &Qatarisation team discussed recruitment, sponsorship and DISCOVER programme opportunities within the company.
