On Sunday 11th of October, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Qatar Section which is chaired by Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Al-Thani, Deputy Manager Director of Maersk Oil Qatar, hosted its second Young Professionals in Energy Event.

The session, which focused on process safety management fundamentals, was held at the Sheraton Hotel Doha, and was attended by local oil and gas young professionals and students. “Over the last decades, process safety management has played an increasingly critical role in the safe operation of oil and gas facilities. This was a great opportunity for young professionals to expand their knowledge on what is process safety and why and how we manage process safety efficiently.” said Mike Gunningham Program Chair of SPE Qatar Section, Head of Subsurface Support Team, Maersk Oil Qatar.

The title of the presentation was “Process Safety Management Fundamentals”, presented by Mr. Dr. Luc Véchot - an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Texas A&M University at Qatar and the Managing Director of the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center – Qatar. The presentation gave an overview of the principles and practices of process safety management through a historical review of incidents that defined process safety. The concept of risk assessment and their application in the oil and gas industry was also explained in details by the speaker.

In Qatar, there are over 420 professional members and over 150 student members at Qatar University and Texas A&M University, Qatar. As one of many sections worldwide, SPE Qatar Section's mission is to collect, disseminate and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources, and related technologies for the public benefits; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence.
